Pediatric Heart Specialists represents a group of physicians dedicated to the treatment of heart disease in children. All our physicians are licensed in pediatric cardiology and stay up to date with the latest medical innovations and breakthroughs in the field. Our goal is to deliver the best possible care in a personal and meaningful way to each and every infant, child, and young adult that we treat. Penn Laird Sr., M.D.

A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Penn Laird graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University with a degree in biology. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was selected chief resident. He then served in the United States Navy as Chief of Pediatrics at the US Naval Hospital, Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. After military service he completed a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Penn Laird Jr., M.D.

Dr. Penn Laird II was raised in Dallas. After graduating from high school, he attended Princeton University, where he earned a degree in Religion. During both high school and college he was a member of the varsity wrestling team. After college Penn returned to Dallas for medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his residency and fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. During his training he served as Neonatology Chief Resident at Ben Taub Hospital. In addition he was honored with the Russell Blattner Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology.

Tracy H. Laird, M.D.

Tracy H. Laird, M.D., was raised in Anchorage, Alaska. For college she attended the University of California at Davis, where she was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and a Magna Cum Laude graduate. She received her M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and was the recipient of the AOA Scholarship for Academic Excellence. She was also a founding member of the Tulane chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association. After medical school Tracy moved to Houston for residency training in Pediatrics at Texas Children’s Hospital at Baylor College of Medicine. There she completed two fellowships, one in Pediatric Cardiology and one in pediatric advanced cardiac imaging. While in Houston she also met and married her husband, Penn Laird II, M.D.

Tim Thomas, M.D.

Dr. Tim Thomas grew up in Rome, Georgia. He graduated from The Georgia Institute of Technology with highest honors in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Spanish. Following college he attended Emory University School of Medicine and was selected by his classmates as the student speaker at graduation. His residency and training in general pediatrics were completed in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he was presented the Oslerian Scholar award for teaching and placed first in the resident research day competition.

Amit Verma, M.D.

Amit Verma, M.D., was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska.  After high school, he attended Duke University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a major in Biology and minor in Psychology.  Amit then returned home for medical school at the University of Nebraska, where he earned the Regent Scholarship and gained recognition for his development and participation in numerous grade-school education programs.
